River Wye – Holme Lacy – Luggs Mouth to Lucksall

Brief description of fishery:

Holme Lacy has a mixture of shallow/fast riffles and steady runs above the road bridge. The Caravan Park section is deep and slow in the main caravan field before it becomes shallow/fast again at the end of the beat.

Chub and Barbel are the main target species with all others present during the summer months (Dace, Roach, Bleak, Perch, Trout, Grayling & Pike). The Caravan Park is one of the few areas that hold very large shoals of Dace long into the winter and often features in the Wye Championships with a large Dace weight.

All the usual modern methods and baits work well on their day but don’t forget Maggots, Caster, Hemp, Worm, Meat & Bread which are all regular producers. A roving approach or pre-baiting several areas before covering them is a good way to find the pockets of fish; alternatively speaking to the local tackle shop can shortcut this and put you on the fish based on recent catch reports.

Luggs Mouthalso offers the Salmon angler a realistic chance of a springer in the right conditions and time of year.

The setting is everything you would expect of the Wye Valley a beautiful rural and peaceful location that can produce some excellent bags of fish throughout the year.

The banks in places are steep, we recommend using a rope with a dog spike, particularly in damp conditions where the clay-based soil becomes very slippery.  Always check the levels using the EA website and keep an eye on it during the day as they can rise high very quickly.
