About Us

About Hereford & District Angling Association

H&DAA was established in 1921 originally to provide fishing for the residents of Herefordshire. Primarily a Salmon fishing club in the early years, we now have probably the best winter coarse fishing in the UK with anglers traveling from all over the UK to sample the great barbel, chub, and pike fishing alongside specimen roach and perch. Several Open matches are run during the Coarse season mainly from September onwards including the famous Wye Championship with winning winter match weights often topping 100lb.

Club History

Hereford & District Angling Association was formed in 1921 by Herbert Hatton, designer of the Wye Minnow and owner of the famous Hatton fishing tackle shop in Hereford.

The primary aim of the club was to provide fishing and protect fishery interests for the residents of Herefordshire.  He and his wife Margaret were made life members in 1937.

We were primarily a Salmon fishing club in the early years with members fishing for Salmon in the early part of the year and then switching to Coarse fishing for chub and dace from June 16th when the Close Season ended. Associate Membership was made available for those living outside the County so that they could enjoy trying to catch a salmon from the best salmon river in England.

With the demise of salmon in the Wye and the illegal introduction of barbel to the Wye and Lugg in the late ’60s, coarse fishing became more dominant with anglers again traveling from across the country to try and catch this hard fighting fish.

The Club has had a good relationship with other landowners on the Wye and this allowed us to use private salmon beats (such as the “Carrots fishery”) for the big competitions we ran when the Salmon season ended. This includes the famous Wye Championship instigated in 1963  which used to attract over 300 anglers from across the country all hoping to catch a big weight of chub or dace. 2022 sees the 60th anniversary of this competition Over the years the Club has increased its portfolio of stretches on the Wye and Lugg and now owns the fishing rights on the majority of waters which we control. This covers over 15 miles of river, much of it double bank fishing.

Membership of the Club continues to increase each year with over 1000 members joining us in 2021, our centenary year.
