Brief description of fishery:
The River Wye Belmont – City South Bank is a deep steady run through Hereford City Centre. Looking downstream you will see the green bridge and then the main road bridge, Greyfriars followed by the Old Wye Bridge. This is the famous match fishing stretch and regularly produces big bags of Roach, Dace, Chublets and Perch as well as bags of big Perch. Large Pike is also present in numbers but not easy to catch due to a large number of baitfish.
Roach, Bleak, Dace, Perch, Pike, and Chublets are the main target species. During Autumn the smaller fish from the upper reaches of the river migrate downstream to this area. Carp of specimen size is present but locating them can be tricky as they like to freely roam miles of River, but they are present to 30lb+. Barbels are still present but are not as easy to target due to the huge shoals of smaller fish. All the usual modern methods and baits work well on their day but don’t forget Maggots, Caster, Hemp, Worm, Meat & Bread which are all regular producers. A static approach is the best way to build a weight of fish, please bring 2 keepnets as you may need them; also speaking to the local tackle shop can put you on the fish based on recent catch reports or check out the recent match reports.
This is a very busy urban setting, and the paths are tarmac with parking near the river. In the winter months finding an empty peg can be difficult; get here early to avoid disappointment.
Platforms have been installed throughout this stretch between the 2 bridges and must be used if available. However there are a few swims without platforms, and we recommend using a rope with a dog spike, particularly in damp conditions where the clay-based soil becomes very slippery. Always check the levels using the EA website and keep an eye on them during the day as they can rise high very quickly.
