The fourth River Wye Feeder Championship, in Association with W. H. Lane and Son of Coventry, took place on Sunday across our waters from Belmont downstream to Eign. The 65 or so anglers taking part were met with a mild day with temperatures around 10 -12C. However with several recent spells of rain the river had been up and down and was predicted to rise slowly from the 1.89m at the start of the match to finish at 2.06m at the end. With the mild temperatures and some colour in the water, most species were expected to feed throughout the match length but barbel were the obvious target along with chub. With the majority of fish shoaled up on the Belmont sections in recent matches it was difficult to predict what would be caught from the out of town sections now that there was some milder weather but Belmont was still likely to provide some decent weights throughout as the flow is slower here, whereas at this height the out of town sections would mostly have a much stronger current. making it more dificult to hold bottom.
As predicted the Belmont sections provided the biggest weights as there were still plenty of chub shoals feeding and with famous peg 96 not included due to the height of the river, the adjacent pegs upstream were likely to benefit. And so it proved with Wye regular Kevin Dicks from Bristol taking full advantage to catch a match winning 103lb 10oz. Runner up was another Wye regular Tom Boulton who was pegged on peg 88. He caught 64lb 14oz of chub. Third was Geoff Brierley who caught 52lb 12oz from peg 85. Fourth was Adee Griffin who caught 46lb 8oz from peg 87.
The Asda bank at Belmont was again dominant with all the framers coming from the right bank. Top weight on the out of town sections was 31lb from the top of Bartonsham, with 27lb 80z the top weight on Eign. Many thanks to W H Lane & Son for their sponsorship of the event. The next match is the end of season Club Match to be fished on the Tennis Courts and Bartonsham sections this coming Sunday (March 1st) followed by the postponed 2 Day Spring Festival on the 4th and 5th of March.on the Belmont and Tennis Courts sections.
